About the Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) Program
The CEE Program is designed for young leaders, ages 21-27, passionate about tackling global challenges through civic engagement and community development. This year-long fellowship empowers fellows with the knowledge, skills, and connections necessary to address the 21st-century issues facing communities around the world. Participants will develop multisector solutions, collaborate with global peers, and enhance their leadership skills in real-world settings.
Fellowship Highlights
- Three-Month U.S. Practicum: IREX matches CEE fellows with civil society organizations across the U.S. for a hands-on professional experience. You’ll gain invaluable insight into the workings of U.S. organizations while receiving mentorship from supervisors and peers.
- Leadership and Civic Engagement Academy: Fellows will immerse themselves in an interactive curriculum that includes service learning, mentorship, and global networking. You’ll also benefit from professional coaching and participate in face-to-face training sessions.
- Community Engagement Project (CEP): After returning to your home country, you’ll implement a community engagement project designed with the help of your U.S. host organization and mentors. This project will be a cornerstone of your impact in your community.
- Community Engagement Project (CEP) Exchange: In a reciprocal exchange, U.S. host organizations and CEE specialists will travel to your home country to support your project. They’ll bring valuable insights and strategies that will further strengthen your project and community.
Eligibility Requirements
The CEE Program is open to emerging civil society leaders who meet the following criteria:
- Age: Between 21-27 years old
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of an eligible country (see below for a list of eligible countries)
- Location: Currently living and working in your home country at the time of application
(Note: Special consideration may be given to refugees working on behalf of their home community) - Experience: At least two years of professional or volunteer experience in community or civil society work
- Community Engagement: Must be actively involved in a community engagement initiative, whether professionally or as a volunteer, with a clear vision for a career in civil society
- Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English
(Note: Semifinalists may be required to take a Duolingo English test) - U.S. J-1 Visa: Must be able to receive a U.S. J-1 visa to participate in the program
Financial Support
The CEE Program is fully funded, covering the following:
- J-1 Visa Support
- Round-trip Travel: From your home country to the U.S.
- Monthly Allowance: To cover housing, meals, and living expenses during your stay in the U.S.
- Health Benefits: Accident and sickness coverage during your time in the U.S.

- Europe and Eurasia: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia
- Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, and Tunisia
- South and Central Asia: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan
- Western Hemisphere: Bolivia, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Peru, and Venezuela
