Applications are now open for the prestigious United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026. This fully funded, 9-month international fellowship is designed for mid-career professionals from developing countries working in ocean affairs, marine governance, or law of the sea.
The program is delivered in two immersive phases:
- Phase One: 3-month professional training at the United Nations Headquarters in New York
- Phase Two: 6-month academic research and study at one of 32 world-class host institutions in countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia.
This fellowship equips participants with the knowledge, tools, and networks needed to drive sustainable ocean governance and influence global marine policy.

Return to Home Country
- Fellows are expected to apply their knowledge and contribute to ocean policy and governance in their home country after the program.
Host Institutions
Fellows may be placed at any of the 32 prestigious host institutions worldwide, selected based on research alignment and academic goals.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, you must:
- Be 25–40 years old
- Hold a first university degree or higher
- Be a mid-level professional working in a relevant field (government, NGO, academic, etc.)
- Be a citizen of a developing country
- Show a strong interest and background in topics related to ocean affairs, marine law, or sustainability
