The Western Balkans Meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future 2027 program is now accepting applications from young leaders across the Western Balkans. This fully funded youth exchange program in Japan offers undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students a unique opportunity to explore peacebuilding, reconciliation, and Japanese culture through a seven-day academic and cultural exchange.
Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) in partnership with the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), the program will take place from 20–26 January 2027 and will bring together 13 participants from the Western Balkans for an unforgettable learning experience in Japan.

About the Western Balkans Meet Japan (MIRAI) Program 2027
The Western Balkans Meet Japan: A Bridge into the Future program has been running under Japan’s MIRAI Program since 2018. It was created to strengthen friendships between Japan and the Western Balkans while promoting peacebuilding, mutual understanding, and cultural exchange.
During the exchange, participants will engage in academic sessions, institutional visits, cultural activities, and discussions on reconciliation, conflict resolution, and international cooperation. The program also provides an opportunity to experience Japan’s rich history and culture firsthand while connecting with young leaders from across the region.

What Participants Will Experience
The MIRAI exchange combines education, cultural immersion, and leadership development. Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about Japan’s approach to peacebuilding and reconciliation.
- Visit leading universities, government institutions, and international organizations.
- Explore Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and other historical sites.
- Participate in workshops and discussions on conflict resolution and regional cooperation.
- Experience Japanese traditions, culture, and society through organized cultural activities.
- Build long-lasting friendships and professional networks with fellow participants from the Western Balkans.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be 20 years or older at the time of application.
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program.
- Live in one of the Western Balkans (WB6) societies.
- Hold a valid passport issued by one of the WB6 countries.
- Have a good command of the English language.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance and community or social engagement.
- Be interested in promoting Japan through communication and cultural exchange activities.
- Have not previously participated in a Government of Japan exchange program or lived in Japan.
- Support the values of reconciliation and regional cooperation in the Western Balkans.
Preferred Candidates
Applicants with experience or involvement in the following areas are encouraged to apply:
- Peacebuilding.
- Reconciliation initiatives.
- Regional cooperation.
- Intercultural dialogue and learning.
- Previous academic or cultural engagement related to Japan (considered an added advantage).

- Bosnia and Herzegovina

Financial Benefits
The program is fully funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
The Scholarship Covers
- Round-trip economy-class flights to and from Japan.
- Accommodation throughout the program.
- Transportation within Japan.
- Overseas travel and accident insurance.
- Meals during official program activities.
- Entrance fees for scheduled visits and activities.
Expenses Not Covered
Participants are responsible for:
- Passport fees.
- Visa application fees (where applicable).
- Vaccinations, if required.
- Local transportation to the departure airport.
- Excess baggage charges.
- Personal shopping and souvenirs.
Visa Information
Participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Montenegro will need a visa to enter Japan.
The organizers will provide detailed visa application guidance to all selected participants after the selection process.
Selection Process
The selection process includes:
- Online application submission.
- Shortlisting of qualified applicants.
- Interviews in September 2026.
- Final selection announcement by mid-October 2026.
