What Is the Global Investigative Journalism Conference?
The Global Investigative Journalism Conference is an international gathering of journalists, editors, researchers and media professionals focused on strengthening investigative reporting.
GIJC27 will feature more than 150 expert panels and workshops, alongside opportunities to exchange ideas with colleagues from over 100 countries. Sessions will explore modern investigative methods, digital research tools, artificial intelligence, data journalism, satellite imagery, climate change, corruption and international reporting partnerships.
Participants will also learn from journalists who have developed innovative ways to investigate powerful institutions, work across borders and report safely in environments where press freedom is restricted.
What Does the Fellowship Cover?
The full fellowship is designed to reduce the financial barriers that prevent journalists from attending the conference.
According to the organisers, a full fellowship includes:
- Round-trip airfare to Rotterdam or the nearest major airport
- Transportation between the airport and conference hotel
- Hotel accommodation for four nights
- Conference registration fees
- Cocktail reception on October 19, 2027
- Breakfast on conference days, October 20–23
- Lunch on full conference days, October 20–23
- Award ceremony dinner on October 22, 2027
GIJN may also offer partial fellowships, depending on available funding. Applicants can indicate whether they wish to be considered for partial support when completing the application.
Important: The fellowship does not cover visa fees, a daily allowance or transportation between the applicant’s home and their departure airport. Applicants should budget for these expenses themselves.
Who Can Apply?
The fellowship is intended for professional journalists working in different media formats, including:
- Print and online journalism
- Television and video reporting
- Radio journalism
- Documentary production
- Multimedia journalism
- Freelance journalism
Applicants working in developing or transitioning countries are encouraged to apply. Experience in investigative journalism or data journalism is an advantage.
GIJN particularly prioritises journalists from the Global South and historically underrepresented groups. Applicants should consult the organisation’s eligible-country list before submitting their applications.
Journalists who cannot afford to attend the conference but are from countries outside the listed eligibility group may still apply and explain their circumstances in the application’s “Additional Notes” section.
Language Requirements
Applicants need a working knowledge of English because the conference sessions and workshops will be conducted in English. The fellowship application must also be completed in English.
What Will Fellows Be Required to Do?
Successful applicants must put their conference experience to practical use after the event.
Following GIJC27, fellows are required to either:
- Produce a story directly related to the conference; or

Applicants should review the organisers’ detailed fellowship guidelines to understand the expected outputs and reporting requirements.
