Applications are now open for the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Fellowship 2027 in Japan. This fully funded research fellowship gives international researchers the opportunity to carry out research in Japan for 3 to 6 months at selected Japanese universities and research institutions.
The fellowship aims to promote global friendship, cultural exchange, and international cooperation through academic research. Scholars from around the world will have the chance to work with experienced researchers while learning more about Japanese culture and society.
About the Matsumae International Foundation
The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) was established in 1979 with the goal of building peaceful relationships between Japan and the rest of the world through academic and cultural exchange. Since then, the foundation has supported researchers from different countries by offering fully funded fellowships in Japan.

Financial Benefits
The Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship covers almost all expenses for selected fellows, including:
- Monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 for living and research expenses
- Arrival allowance of JPY 120,000
- Round-trip economy airfare to and from Japan
- Medical and travel insurance coverage
- Opportunity to conduct research at universities and research institutes across Japan

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the MIF Fellowship 2027, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Must be a non-Japanese citizen
- Must hold a PhD degree
- Must be under 49 years old
- Must obtain an invitation letter from a host institution in Japan
- Must be currently employed in their home country
- Must have good command of English or Japanese
- Applicants who have never visited Japan before are encouraged to apply
