Purpose and Goals of the Fellowship
- Program Purpose:
The fellowship enables Australian institutions (government, NGOs, universities, and private organizations) to partner with emerging leaders and professionals from around the world. - Program Aim:
It targets senior and mid-career professionals, helping them strengthen skills in leadership, policy development, research, innovation, and management. Fellows are expected to return home and contribute to national development.

Fellowship projects must align with one or more of the following priority sectors:
- Climate change, adaptation, resilience & clean energy transition
- Gender equality, disability inclusion & social justice
- Health and medical systems
- Digital economy, cybersecurity & media
- Maritime development and Blue Economy
- Infrastructure development and connectivity
Fellowship Duration & Activity Requirements
- Minimum duration: 2 weeks
- Maximum duration: 52 weeks
- At least 2 weeks of the program must be conducted in Australia
- Activities in the participant’s home country must begin within 4 months of completing the in-Australia component
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Australia Awards Fellowship, applicants must:
- Be 18 years or older at the start of the fellowship
- Be a citizen of an eligible country
- Not be an Australian permanent resident or applying for PR
- Not be currently serving in the military
- Meet visa requirements for Student Visa Subclass 500 (DFAT-sponsored)
- Be available to fully participate in all fellowship activities
- Travel without dependents or family members (DFAT only funds individual fellows)
- If a participant has a disability and requires assistance, they must travel with a carer
