The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is now inviting applications for the 2026 Humboldt Research Fellowship. This prestigious program offers fully funded opportunities for researchers from all disciplines and nationalities to carry out advanced, long-term projects at leading German institutions. Fellows will receive financial support, mentorship, and integration into Germany’s vibrant academic community.
About the Fellowship
The Humboldt Research Fellowship is designed to support outstanding academics and researchers by giving them access to world-class resources in Germany. The program provides tailored assistance and professional development opportunities, making it one of the most competitive international research fellowships.
Two categories of researchers can apply:
- Postdoctoral Researchers – Doctorate completed within the last 4 years; fellowship duration of 6 to 24 months.
- Experienced Researchers – Doctorate completed within the last 12 years; fellowship duration of 6 to 18 months.
Fellowship periods can be split into up to three research stays (minimum of 3 months each). Research must start within 3 years of acceptance, with the possibility of extending the usage window to 4 years.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification.
- For postdocs: Doctorate obtained within the last 4 years.
- For experienced researchers: Doctorate obtained within the last 12 years (or up to 16 years after a Master’s in regions where doctorates are less common, provided significant publications are available).
- Demonstrate a strong track record of peer-reviewed research.
- Secure a research host in Germany who confirms facilities and mentorship.
- Provide two academic references (postdocs should ideally include their doctoral supervisor).
- Have proficiency in English or German, depending on project needs.
Selection Process
Applicants are assessed based on:
- Academic excellence and quality of publications.
- Originality, creativity, and potential impact of the research proposal.
- Methodological soundness and feasibility.
- Career trajectory, mobility, and independent contribution in previous work.
Fellowship Benefits
Successful fellows will receive generous financial and professional support, including:
- Monthly stipend:
- €2,700 for postdoctoral researchers
- €3,200 for experienced researchers
- €2,700 for postdoctoral researchers
- Travel allowance and contributions toward health and liability insurance
- Mobility allowance to support living and research expenses
- Family support: family allowances, childcare assistance, and extra provisions for single parents
- German language courses (2–4 months, also open to partners)
- Flexible research stays (up to 3 segments)
- Career development support and a lifelong membership in the Humboldt Alumni Network
Special provisions include maternity/parental leave extensions and tailored support for fellows with families.
