The University of Pretoria (UP), in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, is now accepting applications for the 2026 intake. This life-changing opportunity offers fully funded undergraduate, Honours, and Master’s scholarships to academically talented young Africans who demonstrate leadership potential but face significant financial or social barriers.
About the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
Since its launch in January 2014, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UP has empowered hundreds of African students with access to world-class education and leadership development.
In Phase 2 (2024–2034), the program has expanded to reach more youth across Africa, including:
- Refugees and displaced persons
- Young people living with disabilities
- Students from marginalized and underrepresented communities
The program not only funds education but also nurtures transformative leaders who are ready to drive social and economic change across Africa.

Program Vision
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to develop the next generation of African leaders. Scholars are expected to:
- Give back to their communities
- Promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership

- Transition into impactful careers, higher education, or business ventures after graduation
What the Scholarship Covers
Successful applicants will receive a fully funded package that includes:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation & living expenses

- Mentorship and academic support
- Community service & internship opportunities
- Psychosocial and career support
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be citizens of an African country
- Apply and gain admission into an eligible undergraduate, Honours, or Master’s program at UP
- Show academic excellence
- Demonstrate leadership potential & commitment to community service
- Face financial and/or social barriers to education
Special consideration is given to applicants with disabilities, refugees, and displaced persons.
Application Process
- Apply for Admission: Submit your application to the University of Pretoria for your chosen degree program.
- Download & Complete Application Form: Get the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application form from the UP official website.
- Prepare Documents: Include proof of admission, academic transcripts, motivation letter, and references (if required).
- Submit Application: Send completed forms and documents electronically to mcfsp@up.ac.za.
- Interview Stage: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews.
