Are you a public interest lawyer passionate about defending digital freedoms and civic spaces in Africa? Here’s your chance to level up your legal advocacy skills through a fully funded training opportunity in Nairobi, Kenya!
The East Africa Law Society (EALS), in partnership with the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL), is inviting applications for its Regional Training for Public Interest Lawyers on Digital Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa. This dynamic, in-person training is scheduled to take place from August 21 to 22, 2025, and will bring together selected legal professionals from across the continent.
About the Program
Delivered through the EALS Institute, the training offers a practical, hands-on learning experience for lawyers working to uphold human rights, expand civic space, and safeguard digital freedoms in Africa.
The program includes:
- Interactive sessions led by top legal experts and digital rights advocates
- In-depth workshops tailored to real-world legal challenges
- Networking opportunities with fellow lawyers from diverse jurisdictions
- Post-training mentorship and access to an exclusive digital platform for legal collaboration
Participants will also earn two Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points, recognized by their national bar associations under the EALS framework.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to:
- Public interest lawyers based in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Legal professionals engaged in digital rights advocacy, civil liberties defense, or working in environments with restricted internet freedom or shrinking civic space
Strong preference will be given to individuals operating under digital authoritarianism or repressive legal environments. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to using the law to protect digital rights and must be open to peer learning and regional collaboration.
