Types of Humboldt Research Fellowships
The program offers two main categories based on research experience:
- Postdoctoral Researchers:
- Must have completed a PhD within the last 4 years.
- Fellowship duration: 6 to 24 months.
- Must have completed a PhD within the last 4 years.
- Experienced Researchers:
- For scholars further along in their careers (more than 4 years post-PhD).
- Fellowship duration: 6 to 18 months, which can be divided into up to three visits within 3 years.
- For scholars further along in their careers (more than 4 years post-PhD).
Financial Coverage
The Humboldt Fellowship is fully funded, covering all major expenses, including:
- Monthly Stipend:
- €2,700 for Postdoctoral Researchers
- €3,200 for Experienced Researchers
- €2,700 for Postdoctoral Researchers
- Round-Trip Airfare to and from Germany
- Health & Medical Insurance
- Research and Conference Allowances
- Family Allowances (for dependents staying at least three months)
- Child Allowance for children under 18
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Humboldt Research Fellowship, applicants must:
- Be a non-German national (open to all other countries).
- Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
- Demonstrate strong research achievements through publications in international journals.
- Present a well-structured research proposal that aligns with a host institution in Germany.

How to Apply for the Humboldt Fellowship 2026
All applications must be submitted online through the official Alexander von Humboldt Foundation portal.The Selection Committee reviews applications three times a year — in March, July, and November.
