Applications are now open for the Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) International Creators Program 2026–2027. This fully funded residency in Tokyo, Japan, offers a unique opportunity for international creators, curators, and researchers to live, create, and explore their artistic practice in one of the world’s most dynamic cultural capitals.
Whether you’re a visual artist, filmmaker, designer, architect, curator, or cultural researcher, this program is designed to foster creativity, cross-cultural exchange, and international collaboration.

What’s Covered?
Participants in all TOKAS Residency Programs will receive:
- Round-trip airfare to Japan
- Monthly living stipend
- Program participation fees
- Accommodation in Tokyo
- Shared studio/workspace access
Types of TOKAS Residency Programs
1. International Creator Residency Program
For creators in fields such as:
- Visual Arts
- Film
- Design
- Architecture
Focus: Hands-on creation and collaboration in Tokyo.
2. Curator Residency Program
For professionals in:
- Art Curation
- Art Criticism
- Cultural Research
Focus: Curatorial projects and art criticism research.
3. Research Residency Program
Open to both international and local creators in fields like:
- Music, Sound Art
- Performing Arts
- Visual Arts, Film, Design, Architecture
- Curation and Cultural Studies
Focus: Deep research on Tokyo’s arts and culture scene.
Residency Timeline
Applicants can select one of the following program periods:
- May – July 2026
- September – November 2026
- January – March 2027
Who Can Apply?
International Creator Residency
- Must reside outside Japan
- Minimum 5 years of experience in their field
- Strong English communication skills
- Duo applications allowed if at least one resides outside Japan
- Not open to students (except PhD candidates)
Curator Residency
- Must reside outside Japan
- At least 3 years of relevant experience
- Good English proficiency
- Duo applications not accepted
- PhD candidates may apply; other students not eligible
Research Residency
- Open to both local and international applicants
- Must have a well-defined research plan on Tokyo’s arts/culture
- Generally not open to students (except PhD candidates)
