The University of Vienna has officially opened applications for the Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies (ViCAS) Fellowships 2027–2028, offering fully funded residential fellowships for outstanding researchers from around the world.
The programme welcomes scholars from all academic disciplines and provides an opportunity to conduct research in Vienna while collaborating with leading academics in an interdisciplinary environment.
Each year, ViCAS hosts around 30 international fellows, creating a vibrant research community focused on innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
About the ViCAS Fellowship Programme
The Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies (ViCAS) is designed to support exceptional researchers by providing dedicated time and resources for high-quality research while encouraging collaboration across disciplines.
Successful applicants will live and work in Vienna, Austria, where they will participate in seminars, workshops, academic discussions, and other activities organized by the centre.
Fellows are expected to remain in Vienna throughout their fellowship and actively contribute to the University’s research community.
Fellowship Categories
The programme offers two fellowship tracks depending on career stage.
1. Mid-Career Fellowship
Applicants must:
- Hold a PhD awarded at least three years before the application deadline.
- Demonstrate an emerging independent research profile.
- Show excellent academic achievements relative to their career stage.
2. Advanced Fellowship
Applicants must:
- Hold a PhD awarded at least eight years before the application deadline.
- Demonstrate outstanding research excellence.
- Have a proven record of academic leadership.
Fellowship Duration
Applicants may choose one of the following residency periods:
- 9-month fellowship: October 2027 – June 2028
- 4-month Fall Fellowship: October 2027 – January 2028
- 4-month Spring Fellowship: March 2028 – June 2028
All fellowships are fully residential and require fellows to be physically present in Vienna for the duration of their stay.
Who Can Apply?
The fellowship is open to scholars from around the world across all academic fields.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Have an outstanding academic record.
- Demonstrate interest in interdisciplinary research.
- Obtain an endorsement from a University of Vienna professor before submitting their application.
- Submit all application materials in English.
Applications are only considered complete after the faculty endorsement has been submitted.
What Fellows Will Do
During their residency, fellows will:
- Conduct independent research.
- Participate in interdisciplinary seminars and workshops.
- Collaborate with researchers from different fields.
- Engage in discussions and academic events hosted by ViCAS.
- Contribute to the intellectual life of the University of Vienna.
